Choosing the Right Safety Laser Scanner: UAM-05LP vs UAM-05LPA vs UAM-05LECA

Shows UAM-05LP, UAM05LPA and UAM05LECA - all from Hokuyo

Selecting the right safety laser scanner is a critical step in designing safe, efficient, and future-proof automation systems. With multiple models available in the UAM-05 series, understanding the differences between the UAM-05LP, UAM-05LPA, and the newer UAM-05LECA can ensure the best fit for your application.

While all three models are built on proven sensing technology and designed to deliver reliable area monitoring, each variant offers distinct advantages depending on your operational requirements, integration needs, and long-term goals.

A Proven Foundation for Industrial Safety

The UAM-05 series is widely used across industrial automation, intralogistics, and mobile robotics applications. These safety laser scanners are designed to provide accurate detection of people and objects within configurable safety zones, helping to prevent collisions and protect both personnel and equipment.

Whether deployed on automated guided vehicles (AGVs), around machinery, or within warehouse environments, the UAM-05 range offers a flexible alternative to traditional guarding methods such as physical guarding, safety mats or light curtains.

UAM-05LP: Simple, Reliable Safety

The UAM-05LP is a dependable solution for applications where safety functionality is required in a typical factory or warehouse environment, without the need for advanced communication.

Key strengths:

  • Easy integration via discrete I/O
  • Stable and proven performance in industrial environments
  • Ideal for fixed installations and standard machine guarding

This model is particularly well suited for users who prioritise simplicity and reliability, or for retrofitting into existing systems where network connectivity is not essential.

UAM-05LPA: Enhanced Flexibility

Building on the LP model, the UAM-05LPA introduces additional flexibility, making it a strong choice for more dynamic and more challenging applications.

Key strengths:

  • Expanded functionality for configurable safety zones
  • Greater adaptability for applications with changing conditions
  • Ethernet-based communication for seamless integration
  • Remote and dynamic configuration with diagnostics capabilities
  • Well suited for AGVs and systems requiring multiple protection fields

For operations where environments are less predictable or where equipment operates under varying conditions, the LPA offers a balance between simplicity and enhanced functionality.

UAM-05LECA: Designed for Connected Systems

The UAM-05LECA represents the next step in safety scanner evolution, designed to meet the demands of modern, connected automation environments.

Key strengths:

  • Ethernet-based communication for seamless integration
  • Remote and dynamic configuration with diagnostics capabilities
  • Reduced wiring complexity and cost compared to traditional I/O systems
  • Increased performance and functionality
  • Ideal for Industry 4.0 and smart factory applications

With increasing demand for networked devices and real-time system visibility, the LECA model enables more efficient installation, monitoring, and maintenance. It is particularly valuable in large-scale or distributed systems where centralised control and diagnostics can significantly reduce downtime.

Comparing the Models at a Glance

While all three models share the same core safety functionality, the choice ultimately depends on how the scanner will be used:

  • UAM-05LP-T301 – Ultra compact 5m safety scanner with 20m warning range, navigation data and 32 configurable areas plus additional key features. Choose for straightforward safety applications where simplicity is key.
  • UAM-05LPA-T301 – Enhanced safety scanner with 5m safety and 30m warning range, improved performance in challenging environments plus 128 configurable areas and dual-axis monitoring with 4 encoder inputs. Choose for more dynamic environments requiring flexible safety zone configuration.
  • UAM-05LECA-T301 – Safety scanner for use in Ethercat / FSoE environments, offering centralised network control and simplified cabling for AGV fleets or networked safety systems. Choose for advanced systems where easy connectivity, cost of integration and remote access are priorities.

Additional choice with Connector versions

Connector‑type versions (marked with a C suffix) are available for the UAM‑05LP(-T301C) and UAM‑05LPA (-T301C). These models replace the fixed cable with a plug‑in connector, making installation simpler and scanner replacement quicker. They are a practical option for OEMs and AGV builders who require modular wiring.  They also offer a complete solution where longer cable lengths are required.

Supporting Your Application Today and Tomorrow

As automation systems continue to evolve, so too do the requirements placed on safety components. Selecting a scanner that not only meets current needs but also supports future expansion is a benefit.

Whether upgrading an existing installation or designing a new system from the ground up, the UAM-05 series provides a scalable safety solution that can adapt alongside your needs.
